This is just one way that drawing mandalas has opened up insights into my personal process, and helped me find appreciation for where I am in each phase of my life’s journey. It’s a big part of why I dearly love drawing my own mandalas, rather than buying ones that others have made. It’s a precious gift, to receive insight into ourselves. Few activities can involve as many different people as coloring. Everyone is equal at the coloring table, and sharing can be the natural result. Coloring is simple and fun, a great way for children to bond in a mutually satisfying activity. A wide variety of skill levels can be accommodated by the plethora of coloring books available on the market.
Active meditation, sometimes called moving meditation, is easier to learn, but just as powerful as the Eastern meditation techniques you’ve likely tried to learn. When practicing active meditation you will chose a simple movement, like coloring, drawing, or even walking, to give you stronger focus. The repetitive motions act as a constant reminder allowing you to easily shift your attention back to the meditation, back to the moment, before any fleeting thoughts take hold. Negative images, past regrets and future worries are simply pushed aside as you take the time to enjoy the present. That is what meditation offers, a way to be truly in the moment. When is the last time you’ve done that?
There is simply something freeing about coloring mandalas. Their symmetry provides a certain amount of comfortable rhythm and predictability, and yet no two people will color them exactly the same way. Even if you don’t quite know why mandala designs appeal to you or what you hope to gain while coloring them, get your colored pencils, crayons or markers ready and dive in. Before you know it, something inside you will shift, and you will have discovered another tool for enhancing your life.
But in modern society, our hearts must beat faster to handle the pace. From every direction we are bombarded with words, sounds, colors, shapes and movement as we try to puzzle a meaning out of what our senses report to our busy brain. Our minds, our bodies struggle to combat against this relentless attack.
Mandalas are geometric patterns starting from a central dot, working outward in repetitive patterns, often integrating symbols and vibrant color. A circle within a circle is a universal pattern full of symbolic meaning. It is simple yet contains an element of the eternal. Mandalas remind us of our relation to the infinite world both beyond and within our bodies and minds.
