It didn’t have anything to do with my skill level or the objective beauty of the mandala, because in hindsight I could see that some were more visually pleasing than others, and not always the most recent were the best. But that didn’t matter when they were new. Every new mandala drawing seemed the most wonderful creation yet. It didn’t have anything to do with the "artistic process" either. I had wondered whether it’s normal to love something you make, at first, but this certainly isn’t true for other things I do, like writing. Nor do my artist friends experience this "love at first sight" with their work.
Often personal mandalas are used as a form of meditation or color therapy and assist in calming the mind and nourishing the soul. Producing specific, multicolored mandalas is a creative and individual process. Any variety of medium can be used including sand, shells, tiles, string, chalk, collage, crayons, paints, glass, fabric, etc. However, it is important to maintain the shape and repetitive geometric patterns classic to mandalas.
Why color mandalas? Cross culturally and throughout history the mandala (the Sanskrit word for "circle") has been present. Mandalas are symmetrical geometric designs, usually enclosed within a circle, a square, or a rectangle. They are used in religious ceremonies as symbols of unity and the universe, and as focal points for meditation.
You can also find coloring helpful for relaxation, and it may even serve as an alternative to formal meditation. Coloring is a way to quiet the mind, listen inwardly and open up to higher knowledge, healing, and creativity. People of all ages have used this sort of activity instinctively, such as knitting or doodling. When a structured by creative activity occupies our hands and eyes but not of our concentration, it leaves an opening for the creative suspension of the inner mental chatter. During these times we are freed from habitual urges, as well as mental and emotional discord. Science and medicine have also discerned that this state optimizes the self-regenerative powers of our bodies.
I also found out that there are no rules when it comes to coloring, color outside the lines; it is surprising a way of breaking the rules, and it feels so good. There are no coloring police to arrest you for breaking the color inside the lines rule. Nor do you have to follow the instructions and use the suggested colors. It is a release that is outstanding.
This is just one way that drawing mandalas has opened up insights into my personal process, and helped me find appreciation for where I am in each phase of my life’s journey. It’s a big part of why I dearly love drawing my own mandalas, rather than buying ones that others have made. It’s a precious gift, to receive insight into ourselves.
