It didn’t have anything to do with my skill level or the objective beauty of the mandala, because in hindsight I could see that some were more visually pleasing than others, and not always the most recent were the best. But that didn’t matter when they were new. Every new mandala drawing seemed the most wonderful creation yet. It didn’t have anything to do with the "artistic process" either. I had wondered whether it’s normal to love something you make, at first, but this certainly isn’t true for other things I do, like writing. Nor do my artist friends experience this "love at first sight" with their work.
This is just one way that drawing mandalas has opened up insights into my personal process, and helped me find appreciation for where I am in each phase of my life’s journey. It’s a big part of why I dearly love drawing my own mandalas, rather than buying ones that others have made. It’s a precious gift, to receive insight into ourselves. Try it yourself, and let the mandalas introduce you to the hidden beauty and potential within you!
Remember when you were a child, lying on your tummy on the floor, coloring book open, crayon in hand with the other crayons spilling out of the box? Can you remember the sense of peace and enjoyment you felt while you were coloring? Why not consider revisiting this favorite childhood pastime to help during those times when you find yourself feeling on edge.
Mandalas are all around us. One simply has to walk through a garden to find beautiful flowers in bloom and appreciate their circular, repetitive patterns. Increasing awareness of the many manifestations of mandalas in nature can begin by examining an atom. Each cell is a mandala. On a grander scale the universe with the rotation of the planets around the sun or the shape of the galaxies and other cosmic manifestations demonstrate mandalas as a fundamental form. Mandalas are present in almost all scientific studies from geology and biology to physics and chemistry. Becoming aware of their ever present nature allows individuals to find mandalas in previously unrecognized locations.
I discovered this secret after years of playing with these "art meditations." It was a natural progression, one that could happen with anyone. Once I figured out how to make nice mandalas, I spent a lot of time looking at them. I was admiring them, of course (a special treat because I am not artistically gifted). But in time I noticed something interesting. I loved each and every mandala...the day I created it. Well, maybe not as briefly as one single day, but there was a definite time-frame, it seems, for each mandala. By the time I felt called to draw a new one, I would now love it the best, and the old ones didn’t seem as wonderful as they had in the beginning. They had faded into mere acceptability, their sparkle gone.
Few activities can involve as many different people as coloring. Everyone is equal at the coloring table, and sharing can be the natural result. Coloring is simple and fun, a great way for children to bond in a mutually satisfying activity. A wide variety of skill levels can be accommodated by the plethora of coloring books available on the market.
