This is just one way that drawing mandalas has opened up insights into my personal process, and helped me find appreciation for where I am in each phase of my life’s journey. It’s a big part of why I dearly love drawing my own mandalas, rather than buying ones that others have made. It’s a precious gift, to receive insight into ourselves. Try it yourself, and let the mandalas introduce you to the hidden beauty and potential within you!
My older daughter continued to draw; she especially drew mandalas and other geometric types of pictures. I was proud of her endeavors for they were truly beautiful. Years passed and any thought of coloring was far from my mind, then after my third daughter was born, coloring resurfaced. I was still too deeply entrenched in the line between childhood that I resisted the draw of the crayons.
You can also find coloring helpful for relaxation, and it may even serve as an alternative to formal meditation. Coloring is a way to quiet the mind, listen inwardly and open up to higher knowledge, healing, and creativity. People of all ages have used this sort of activity instinctively, such as knitting or doodling. When a structured by creative activity occupies our hands and eyes but not of our concentration, it leaves an opening for the creative suspension of the inner mental chatter. During these times we are freed from habitual urges, as well as mental and emotional discord. Science and medicine have also discerned that this state optimizes the self-regenerative powers of our bodies.
Mandala designs are easy to see in flowers. Petals surrounding a central core form the most natural designs. Imagine a sunflower, with its face full of sunflower seeds, surrounded by large, bright yellow petals. It’s a mandala guaranteed to make you smile. And something equally as cheerful - a daisy. Or perhaps a rose or a begonia for a mandala with overlapping petals.
Remember when you were a child, lying on your tummy on the floor, coloring book open, crayon in hand with the other crayons spilling out of the box? Can you remember the sense of peace and enjoyment you felt while you were coloring? Why not consider revisiting this favorite childhood pastime to help during those times when you find yourself feeling on edge.
I began to trust that in time those blanks would fill themselves in, as indeed my mandalas began to do as the issue was resolved in my outer life. Which came first - the "filled in" mandalas or the bridging of my work into the world? I can’t say for certain. It was a process, not a sudden change. It seems to me, though, that the mandalas and my life worked together...the mandalas helping me relax so my life could move forward more easily, and my work in the world helping me connect the core with the rim in my mandalas.
