And each mandala was a perfect snapshot of where I was - emotionally, psychologically, spiritually - at a particular time. That’s why I loved them so much in the moment: they were mirrors of my soul state. That’s when I knew that drawing mandalas can be a perfect tool to liberate our hidden truths, help us know ourselves, and evolve. I began working with my mandalas - reading them, I call it - in much the same way as you can interpret dreams.
There is simply something freeing about coloring mandalas. Their symmetry provides a certain amount of comfortable rhythm and predictability, and yet no two people will color them exactly the same way. Even if you don’t quite know why mandala designs appeal to you or what you hope to gain while coloring them, get your colored pencils, crayons or markers ready and dive in. Before you know it, something inside you will shift, and you will have discovered another tool for enhancing your life.
Coloring is an activity long thought of as the child domain. It pretty easy to see how coloring is beneficial to children. They can learn about shapes and colors, and experiment with different artistic mediums. Moms and restaurant owners have known for ages that a few crayon and paper or place-mat to color on can still the restless child. Pre-school and elementary teachers know that coloring is a great interactive activity because it encourages concentration and focus while allowing the child to be creative and expressive.
Mandalas are very popular these days, both buying the artwork and drawing mandalas yourself. The paintings that you buy are, if well-done, like a key that unlocks the spiritual dimension inside of you. But when you draw them yourself, they can be even more effective: the exact key for where you are, right now.
This is just one way that drawing mandalas has opened up insights into my personal process, and helped me find appreciation for where I am in each phase of my life’s journey. It’s a big part of why I dearly love drawing my own mandalas, rather than buying ones that others have made. It’s a precious gift, to receive insight into ourselves. Why color mandalas? Cross culturally and throughout history the mandala (the Sanskrit word for "circle") has been present. Mandalas are symmetrical geometric designs, usually enclosed within a circle, a square, or a rectangle. They are used in religious ceremonies as symbols of unity and the universe, and as focal points for meditation.
